Celebrating my hair’s 4th birthday

In the spring of 2006, I decide to go natural, cease in the decease with the white lye. And there were a few reasons why. (You can read more about it here) But mostly I wanted to see what I would look like natural. In October of 2006 is when I did my big chop. I was completely natural and terrified. Not only was my natural texture strange to me but I had never had short hair before. I really didn’t know what to do with the texture or length of my hair. I didn’t know what others were going to think. I almost hyperventilated in the mirror as I saw my new look for the first time.

Shortly after my big chop, I received so many questions about my products and natural hair styles. I figured I would start a blog to reference my natural hair journey. Since then it has grown to an international resource and social community with the largest Facebook & Twitter following of any other beauty blog. Natural Hair Rules is an award nominated natural hair/beauty site that receives top rankings in the State of Texas as well as NetworkedBlog. This was a cause for a celebration!!!

That’s exact what we did on Oct. 8, 2010 in the heart of Houston, TX. There were so many beautiful natural ladies and the men that love them. I’m not just saying that. You can see for yourself in the pictures here. It was very important to me that I had an opportunity to meet and greet all of my natural hair family. We mix and mingled. Product shopped and swapped with the wonderful vendors.

Sister Roberta, Owner of Sister Roberta’s Organic Hair Products provide informative tips and which ingredients will nourish the individual hair types of the guest. Monica Howard of Curly Chicks has the cutest t-shirt line. Organic Jewelry was offered by Karma Colby of KarmaSoul International and Rasheeda Golden of A Golden Divine Touch Jewelry. Unique African Bags were displayed by Nneka Mokwe of Ifenkili. Need unique hair accessories check out Keondra’s InnerMe Custom Creations. This fabulous list will feed the jones of any natural hair product junkie.

Saturday, September 11, 2010 My Black is Beautiful (MBIB) Live came to the H!!! Yes!!! And the women of Houston and surrounding areas showed up and showed out!!! Many ladies lined up at Reliant Center to enter the convention hall to receive MBIB tote bags from the beautiful smiling faces of the MBIB volunteer staff. The hall was filled with positive energy. Each guest had the opportunity to receive free pampering sessions that included massages, manicures, facials, makeovers hair styling & more. There was also a model search for the New Faces of My Black is Beautiful. Congratulations to Miko Taylor who was selected as 1 of 8 semi-finalist for Houston. Miko Taylor is a personal friend and fellow naturalista of Natural Hair Rules.

Tracey Ferguson, Editor In Chief of Jones Magazine welcomed and announced the Jones Awards which will be presented by My Black is Beautiful that will honor Sam Fine of Sam Fine Beauty, Byron Lars of Byron Lars Beauty Mark, & Sessilee Lopez!

The event featured performances from a Hip-Hop pioneer and Soul Star. MC Lyte got the crowd dancing to some of the latest music and songs that took us back. Ladies for all generation came together in front of the stage to form a “Soul Train” line. And they didn’t stop there. MC Lyte turned the heat up by playing the “Cupid Shuffle” and “The Wobble”. R&B Singer Leela James educated the crowd on “Soul Music”. “Music with verses that had substance” James exclaimed. I’m still giddy because I was invited to dance on the stage with both Leela James & MC Lyte. African Dancer, KarmaSoul performed a traditional dance that exhibited the origin of many of our Hip Hop dances. The event also included live entertainment from local singers & musicians. I don’t have to tell you, Saturday was a blast. You can see for yourself here.

Black Women were pampered, encouraged and united!!! My Black is Beautiful Live Houston was filled with beauty of all shades, shapes and hair types. Simply Beautiful!!! Until next time!!!

Natural Hair Celebration

Hosted by Naturally Curly and Miss Jessie’s

April 25, 2010, Naturally Curly and Miss Jessie’s hosted their first ever Natural Hair Celebration in Austin, TX. It was actually Titi and Miko Branch’s first time to visit the great state of Texas. My fellow Texans wowed the Miss Jessie’s Owners with the vast number and variety of naturalistas. Ladies travelled from San Antonio, Dallas and Houston like myself and my road dog, Lorece (Thanks again, girly. I had fun!) to participate in this great event. We were welcomed into Avenue Five Institute beauty school with open arms to check in and receive a souvenir bag.

As Titi described their work at Miss Jessie’s and answered questions from the audience about all kinds of hair issues, Miko styled the hair of five models with different hair textures to show the many uses for Miss Jessie’s products. The styles included an roller set as a transitioning style, dry braid out which the lovely Natural Chica modeled (see below), finger styling on two different types of hair (Kabrina wave and curly).

This event provided a venue where the natural ladies from the city of Austin, surround cities as well as out of state, like You tube vlogger, Joy Mignon the opportunity to meet & greet as well as to learn new styling techniques for the summer time. It was great to meet the ladies in person. They were all so sweet. I had the opportunity to introduce myself to Natural Hair Blues herself Courtney of You Tube No Lye Just Curls. There was a special treat for all the product junkies, a fully stocked Curl Mart with the entire line of Miss Jessie’s products including the newer Super Sweetback Treatment.

Titi and Miko were very personable and responsive to all the questions and natural hair woes of the group. The attendance was phenomenal. I hope the ladies felt love and at home. We got get these girls to Houston. *Hint, hint*
