Rene Syler of Good Enough Mother says "My 14-year-old daughter is my hair hero."

_DSC4809I had the opportunity to meet and introduce, Rene Syler at the 2nd Annual Nappiology Natural Hair Expo on Nov. 7, 2010 as the keynote speaker.  Rene Syler is an influential natural woman not only because she is a business woman, mother, wife, breast cancer advocate but she is the 1st African American woman to co-host a National morning show. She has interviewed politicians such as Senator John McCain, Senator John Kerry, and countless authors, Jeffrey Deaver and Walter Mosely, among her many favorites. In her four years at The Early Show, she delved into the lives of Russell Crowe, J. Lo, Tom Selleck, Antonio Banderas, Denzel Washington, Beyonce and Will Smith to name a few.

Syler shared her natural hair journey that spans about two years.  One of her biggest motivators was her middle school age daughter who has been natural all her life.  Rene said “how could I encourage her to embrace her natural beauty if I was beating the curl out of my hair”.  She was very personable and funny as she shared her natural experiences and tips.

Rene began her natural hair journey in 2009 after being hospitalized for asthmatic bronchitis.  She noticed the prolong effect of relaxers and the toll it was taking on her hair and hair line. Shortly after she started to transition, she then big cho'p’d at 3 1/2 months.  Like most naturalistas she learned to care and maintain her hair with the help of vloggers and bloggers.  She mentioned De of Nappiology, Inc. was the first to mention“BC ” to her.  Since then she has not looked back.  She boldly declared in front of auditorium full of people that she would not take job where she had to change her hair.  Thank you Rene for standing up for natural women everywhere!!!
